Course Information
1. Course Description
The Infrastructure Planning Seminar is a required course for graduate students (M-Eng. and D-Eng.), which is designed to enhance the students’ knowledge of transportation engineering, ranging from the basic concepts to the more advanced theories and applications. Selected reading materials such as textbooks, manuals, journals or conference proceedings are used as references, which are then reviewed and presented accordingly.

2. Purpose
a. To enhance the students’ understanding of traffic engineering concepts and the state-of-the-art in transportation research and practice through literature review and knowledge sharing
b. To develop and improve the students’ research capabilities
c. To develop and improve the students’ presentation skills
d. To sharpen the students’ minds through logical and critical thinking
3. Course Policies
a. Each student is required to intensively review pre-assigned, reference materials and present the relevant contents and details during any of the regular meetings.
b. All students shall be assigned 2-3 articles each to review for their presentations (more if necessary). Each student shall present at least twice for the whole duration of the course.
c. Each presenter shall be given 20-25 minutes to finish his/her presentation, which shall then be followed by 35-40 minutes of discussion. All presenters are only given an hour each to complete everything (presentation and discussion).
d. There will be 2 presentations for each meeting.
e. All students are expected, not only to present the contents of the assigned article, but also to show their own insights about the topic and to possibly include other related researches as well.
f. One of the students will be designated as the chairperson for each meeting. The chairperson shall act as the moderator of the presentations and discussions. He shall also be responsible for time-keeping. Each student must be given the chance to be the chairperson, if the schedule and the number of students allow it.
g. All presentations and discussions shall be done in English.
4. Reference Material
For this term, the reference material shall be selected articles from the TRB 87th Annual Meeting Proceedings (CD-ROM). Refer to the attachment for the list of topics.
5. Schedule
The meetings shall be held on pre-determined Monday evenings, from 6:30-8:30 PM. For this term, the schedule of meetings for this course shall be as follows: April 21, May 12, May 26, June 2, June 9, June 23 and July 7 and July 14.
